Bottom Line

Upper House is a luxury hotel that opened in September 2013 on the top floors of the glass-fronted Gothia Towers, a Gothenburg landmark. The 49 contemporary-style guest rooms are decked out in designer furniture and have large windows offering scenic views over the city. The hotel's most impressive feature is the glass-bottomed outdoor swimming pool protruding from the 19th floor. The bright and modern restaurant and lounge bar on the 25th floor also offer spectacular views. Other features include the hotel's two indoor pools, and guests have free access to the luxury spa and hamam with steam baths, while a variety of spa treatments are available (for a fee). Rates here are pricey and reflect the high-end design atmosphere. The luxury Elite Plaza Hotel located in the center of town in a lovely neo-classical building is a cheaper alternative in comparison.

Oyster Hotel Review

Exclusive and stylish property with contemporary decor

Upper House occupies the top five floors of the iconic 30-story Gothia Towers, a modern, glass-fronted building that houses another hotel. The building is part of a complex that includes the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre. Guests have to negotiate the large, busy conference center to reach the hotel's reception area. The lobby area is painted a soothing, clinical white, and the atrium and large windows let in a lot of natural light while offering scenic views of the cityscape below. The space is stylish and minimalist, with contemporary-style lamps and black armchairs, white reception counters, light-beige tiled floors, and a brown-colored carpet in the seating area. Upper House is popular with discerning travelers mostly traveling as couples.

Located in Gothia Towers, a city landmark

Upper House is located in Gothia Towers, a glass, multi-storied building that's part of the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre. The city center, and Gothenburg Central Station can be reached in eight minutes via public transit or five minutes by car. Local attractions located nearby include Liseberg Amusement Park, located just across the street (a three-minute walk), Liseberg Theater (a five-minute walk), Scandinavium Arena (a six-minute walk), and Gothenburg Museum of Art (a 10-minute walk). Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport is a 20- to 25-minute drive. The hotel can arrange for airport transfers, or there's a bus from Göteborg Korsvägen (a five-minute walk from the hotel) that arrives at the airport in 25 minutes.

Spacious and stylish guest rooms with designer furniture and fantastic views

The guest rooms at Upper House are exceptionally spacious, starting at 333 square feet for the Superior Rooms. Rooms are light-filled thanks to the many large panoramic windows -- beds in some rooms are placed in front of the glass to optimize the scenic views. The chic and stylish furniture is by European designers like Vitra, Walter Knoll, and Edra, and the luxurious beds are by Carpe Diem Beds Of Sweden, topped with high-quality Italian linens. The color palette is made up of soft grays, browns, and beiges, with a few bright accents like a bright red armchair, or mauve pillows. Some guests find the rooms stark and devoid of personality, while others appreciate the clean contemporary style. Each Deluxe Room has a sitting area made up of a tan leather sofa and black leather armchair; Superior Rooms have compact sitting areas with fabric chaise loungers. Each room has two flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The 1700-square-foot Grand Executive Suite is a two-bedroom duplex connected by a circular staircase, with a two-story panoramic window. It's equipped with a kitchenette, coffeemaker, large dining table, and living space. The soft-gray-tiled bathrooms are large and feature spacious walk-in showers with huge rainfall showerheads, separate bathtubs, and Molton Brown toiletries. Hairdryers along with robes and slippers are provided. Every room also has a minibar stocked with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and an electric kettle for coffee and tea. Other amenities include safes and ironing facilities. Turndown service is included, as well.

On-site spa, gym, outdoor and indoor pools, and restaurant and lounge

Guests staying at Upper House have free access to the on-site spa which includes a sauna, hamam with Turkish steam baths, and a variety of organic spa treatments (charged extra) like facials, massages, waxing, and makeup. The adjacent gym features equipment from the Life Fitness Signature range, including an AMT cross-trainer, cable-cross machine, as well as weight-lifting, strength, and fitness training equipment. A highlight is the outdoor glass-bottomed swimming pool that juts out of the glass building on the 19th floor and offers spectacular city views. There are also two additional indoor swimming pools. Upper House Dining is the contemporary-style on-site restaurant and lounge located on the 25th floor. Guests can dine indoors or on the outdoor terrace with views of the city below. The free breakfast served here gets very good reviews from past guests for variety and the quality of ingredients, some of which come from the rooftop garden and beehives. The hotel also has a boardroom available on the 20th floor for meetings of up to 20 persons. On-site parking, including for electric cars, and valet service are available for an extra fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
