Bottom Line

The Hotel Fort Canning is a modern boutique in a beautifully restored historic military building. This early 20th century building has been completely renovated and includes lovely rooms with innovative layouts. Some room categories feature open bathrooms and private decks, while all have plush beds, international plug extensions, and flat-screen TVs. But some guests may feel that the glass-enclosed bathrooms lack privacy. The excellent property amenities include three pools -- one for kids -- along with an Asian bistro, a pizza bar, a cocktail lounge, and a fitness center. The hotel is in a quiet location on a hilltop surrounded by a park, but is close to most attractions and four subway lines.

Inside Fort Canning Park, near the downtown area attractions and the subway

The Hotel Fort Canning is located inside historic Fort Canning Park, one of the most important landmarks in Singaporean history. This park is the location of turning points in history such as the decision to surrender the city-state to the Japanese. Some guests complain that taxi drivers have a hard time finding the address, but the location is very convenient for those who want to visit the sights, as well as for those in town for business. Numerous attractions can be found nearby, including the Marina Bay area, the Raffles Hotel, the National Museum of Singapore, and Orchard Road. For longer distances, there are four subway lines within a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

The Historic District of Singapore covers a large portion of the right bank of the Singapore River, and it encompasses most of the attractions in the downtown area, such as the Padang, the Esplanade Park, Theatre, and Library, and Fort Canning Park. The neighborhood is one of the most visited areas in Singapore, both by locals and tourists alike, as it is home to a number of high-end hotels, wonderful restaurants, corporate high-rises, and government buildings.

Singapore is known to have heavy traffic at all times, so the following driving times are just for guidance.

  • 25-minute drive to Changi International Airport
  • 10-minute walk to the National Museum of Singapore
  • 13- to-15-minute walk to 4 subway lines (CC1, CC2, NE6 and NS24)
  • 16-minute walk to the City Hall and the Padang
  • 16-minute walk to the Parliament House
  • 17-minute walk to St. Andrew’s Cathedral
  • 19-minute walk to Esplanade Park
  • 19-minute walk to the heart of the action along Orchard Road
  • 23-minute walk to famous Raffles Hotel
  • 24-minute walk to the Marina Bay area and the Esplanade Theater and Library
  • 25-minute walk or 17-minute subway ride to the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Center
  • 25-minute walk or 20-minute subway ride to Chinatown
