Bottom Line

A decidedly modern property, Novotel Phuket Kata Avista Resort and Spa offers upscale, family-friendly lodging. The resort's hilltop location delivers bird's-eye views of the beach and sea, but the walk up and down the steep hill may be tedious for some. Thankfully, there's plenty to occupy guests on the grounds, including two pools, a game room, a chic library, a cozy spa, a rooftop deck, and a kids' club. The hotel's 143 guest rooms are spacious and streamlined with platform beds, deep soaking tubs, and private balconies overlooking the pool or ocean. But if you're longing to stay by the beach, try the comparable Kata Beach Resort and Spa or the pricier Katathani Phuket Beach Resort.

Scene

A modern, family-focused resort with ample common areas for games and reading

Set on a hilltop above the fray of the tourist sites of Kata Center, the Novotel Phuket Kata Avista Resort and Spa encompasses 143 rooms inside a squat, rectangular building. Guests cross a wood-beamed covered walkway bordered by a streamlined lily pond and arrive to a modern, expansive, slate-gray lobby. At one end, a long front desk is set off by an accent wall finished in shimmery blue tile. A row of computers line a long desk, allowing guests to check email and print out boarding passes, while roomy leather sofas and daybeds offer guests a chance to rest after the walk up the hill.

Gamers gather include a game room equipped with ping pong, billiards, and foosball tables. Bookworms can linger in the library with jewel-tone armchairs and splashy canvas artwork bringing life to the tidy rows of books and newspapers. And sunbathers can head up to the rooftop terrace carpeted in Astroturf and set with brown loungers and floor pillows.

The soft white sand of Kata Yai Beach is a quick walk down the hill, but most guests prefer to settle in the cushioned lounge chairs by the pool, the hotel's social center. Divided into two levels, the pool has an upper level with a swim-up bar that's favored by adults and a lower level with a splashing waterfall that attracts active kids.

  • Five-minute walk to Kata Yai Beach
  • Five-minute drive to Karon Beach

Rooms

Spacious rooms with modern amenities, private balconies, and large bathrooms with separate soaking tubs

Overlooking the pool, gardens, and the ocean, Avista Phuket's 143 rooms are categorized based on size and location. Deluxe Rooms (462 square feet) overlook the pool or gardens and feature one king-size bed and a separate sofa. Grand Deluxe Rooms are slightly larger (512 square feet) and come equipped with garden views and a king-size bed as well as a double bed. Avista Club Rooms are the same size and configuration as the entry-level (Deluxe) rooms but offer oceanfront views, and they're located on a higher floors.

In general, the interiors are long and narrow, stretching from the front door to double sliding glass doors that open to the outdoors. All of the rooms are tastefully decorated in a contemporary palette of neutrals. Slate-gray accent walls, warm wooden furniture, and white bedding give a streamlined look. Private balconies furnished with cushioned rattan chairs and small side tables provide the ideal perch for sipping morning coffee. Beds, set on wood platform bed frames with oversized headboards and tiny gooseneck lamps, are topped with accent pillows and throws in silky tones of sapphire blue, brown, and garnet. Built-ins abound, with one wall connecting long desks to armoire-style closets stocked with safes, robes and slippers, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Some rooms feature separate minibars with small sinks and microwaves. Other modern amenities include wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi.

Bathrooms tiles coordinates with the bedding in shades of red, brown, and blue. Vanities feature black marble countertops and square white porcelain sinks. Walk-in showers are equipped with both hand-held and rain showerheads. Unfortunately, some of the grout here a looking discolored. Deep soaking tubs are the stand-out feature of the bathrooms, bumping up against a glass wall that overlooks the bedrooms; this setup allows for ample natural light -- but not a lot of privacy. The one-bedroom suites have free-standing oval tubs set right in front of the balconies.

Features

An airy restaurant with contemporary style, a jewel-toned spa, and small fitness center overlooking the pool

The two free-form pools act as the hotel's hub. One with a zigzag formation has a funky waterfall feature that invites kids to splash around. The other more linear pool, has calmer waters and more sunbathing adults. Both are bordered in lush green ferns and palm trees.

The hotel's restaurant, En Vogue, offers all-day dining in a modern, airy space with cushioned banquette seating and tables opening onto the pool. A large buffet breakfast kickstarts the day for most guests while evenings feature entertainment for both adults and kids. Those looking to squeeze in a workout will find adequate cardio equipment and free weights in a poolside gym surrounded with floor-to-ceiling windows. The cozy Sukko Spa, finished in rich purple and red fabrics, caters to couples and guests looking to relax and sample treatments that incorporate local herbal recipes. Kids can also play freely in the resort's colorful kids' club.
