Bottom Line

An upscale, 77-room resort, the Metadee fronts a huge lagoon-style heated pool with a canal river that connects directly to the terraces of many of the rooms and villas. The hotel maintains a cohesive style that is airy and organic, with floors, ceilings, and furnishings crafted from glowing teak wood and textiles in neutral tones of ivory and taupe. Rooms are beautifully decorated, with spa-like bathrooms and outdoor balconies or terraces. Lush foliage and mature trees add to the oasis atmosphere, disguising the fact that the location is close to the hustle of Kata Beach Village's shops and restaurants. While not directly on the ocean, the resort provides regular shuttle service to Kata Beach. Those who must be beachfront might enjoy the Kata Beach Resort and Spa or Katathani Phuket Beach Resort.

A tasteful and sunny lobby connecting public spaces on paved pathways

Don't let the resort's somewhat tacky gold-and-black sign on the main street next to a pizza joint fool you, the Matedee is a tasteful property off the main drag. A walkway covered in wooden beams guides guest into the small lobby, a sunny space flanked with floor-to-ceiling windows topped with a pitched wooden roof. Navy stripped benches and square tables are hardly grand, but they give a pleasant spot to read the newspaper. Paved paths on trim green grass connect the resort's public spaces. The result is attractive, if unremarkable. But the resort's real allure is in its pool and guest rooms.

In Kata Beach, about a five-minute shuttle ride to Kata Yai Beach and Kata Village, a 60-minute drive to Phuket International Airport

Set back along a side street off busy Kata Road, the resort’s location, close to the entertainment areas of Kata Beach Village, allows guests to easily walk to nearby restaurants and shops. The white sand of Kata Yai Beach is a 15-minute walk, but the hotel offers regular shuttles.

  • 15-minute walk to Kata Beach
  • 15-minute walk to Kata Center
  • 15-minute drive to Karon Beach
  • 15-minute drive to Patong Beach
  • 15-minute drive to Phuket
  • 25-minute drive to Big Buddha
  • 60-minute drive to Phuket International Airport

Airy and elegant design with blonde wood; spa-like bathrooms; and terraces, some with private plunge pools or direct access to the canal pool.

All of the resort's 77 rooms and villas follow a clean and airy design aesthetic with hardwood floors, white walls, large sliding-glass doors, simple wood furnishings, and rattan sofas accented in soothing colors such as soft green and coral. Amenities include minibars stocked with free sodas, juice, and water; flat-screen TVs; and closets complete with robes, slippers, flip-flops, umbrellas, beach bags, and safes. And all include a furnished balcony or terrace. Bathrooms have beautiful, spa-like fixtures: white basin sinks set in wood vanities; glass-walled, walk-in showers; polished concrete floors with stone accents; bamboo towel ladders; and deep soaking tubs set next to windows overlooking the room.

Deluxe Rooms (538 square feet) are set in a two-story building bordering the long canal-style pool. Rooms on the top floor have balconies that overlook the pool while rooms on the ground floor offer direct swim-out access. On the opposite side of the canal from the rooms are the hotel’s nine pool-access villas. Larger (968 square feet) and more private, they feature vaulted ceilings, king-size canopy beds wrapped in white drapes, sizable bathrooms with double sinks, outdoor showers, and private terraces with lounge chairs that allow guests to relax poolside at their leisure.

The top tier in terms of guest rooms would be the 19 pool villas. These free-standing villas offer 1,292 square feet of space with king size beds; large day beds for lounging; and walled terraces with private, jetted plunge pools; outdoor showers; and covered salas. A few three-bedroom villas are also available, ideal for larger families.

An alluring pool bumping up to the rooms, an open-air restaurant and bar, a small spa, and a bright fitness center

The Matdee doesn't have a beachfront location, but it does offer a huge lagoon-style swimming pool and a long Venice-style canal pool that flows past the villas and room. Guests, mostly families and couples, have the option of lounging in cushioned chairs ringing the pool or hiding out on the terraces of the rooms and villas overlooking or connecting to the canal-style pool. Those who prefer total privacy can book a private villa with its own plunge pool, but that tiny body of water pales in comparison to the main pool with its overhanging foliage and cascading waterfalls.

Himmphan, which translates to "cashew nut" in Thai, is the resort’s sole restaurant, an open-air space furnished with wood furniture and finished in neutral tones accented by jewel-toned seat cushions. With tiered seating on the terrace overlooking the pool, the restaurant serves an all-day menu that’s heavy on seafood and local ingredients. Close by is the bar, a small open-air structure overlooking the pool with seating for about 12.

An airy space filled with natural light, the Metadee Spa is adorned in soft white-and-wood decor. This small spa specializes in treatments such as aromatherapy massage and antioxidant scrubs. The resort also offers a light-filled fitness studio with modern cardio equipment, a business area with two computers, and a children’s playroom.
