Bottom Line

The 243-room Inn at Penn may be a Hilton, but it feels far more like a boutique hotel than a chain. Rich wood paneling in the lobby and the library add a traditional, Ivy League feel to the inn, and the hotel does in fact have strong ties to the university: It's not only located on Penn's campus, but the on-site University Club is exclusive to members after the breakfast for hotel guests concludes. The rooms are a sophisticated blend of classic and contemporary styles, and all have iPads, Cuisinart coffeemakers, and work desks with ample electrical outlets. Penne Restaurant & Wine Bar serves quality Italian fare for lunch and dinner.

Oyster Hotel Review

A charming inn in University City with ties to Penn

The Inn at Penn is on the University of Pennsylvania campus and close to Drexel, so it's no surprise that a large part of the clientele is composed of students visiting colleges or parents visiting their children. The Penn bookstore is right downstairs, and it's a short walk to the heart of campus.

No wonder, then, that the inn's decor feels distinctly Ivy League. The lobby has rich wood paneling contrasted against plush modern furniture, and the library, dubbed the "Living Room," is stunning, with two fireplaces , wall-to-wall bookshelves, and drink service. An extensive breakfast buffet is served in the University Club, but after it concludes the Club is available only to members -- specifically, dues-paying University of Pennsylvania faculty, staff, alumni, and graduate students.

On the University of Pennsylvania Campus in University City, within walking distance of Drexel

The Inn at Penn is well situated for guests visiting either the University of Pennsylvania or Drexel University. It's toward the north of Penn's campus, closer to Wharton, but just about everything on campus is within easy walking distance. All of Philadelphia's main attractions, however, will require a drive.

  • 4-minute drive to 30th St. Station
  • 7-minute drive to Rittenhouse Square Park
  • 9-minute drive to City Hall and Center City
  • 12-minute drive to the Philadelphia Convention Center
  • 14-minute drive to the Independence National Historic Park (home to Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, and the Liberty Bell)
  • 14-minute drive to Penn's Landing, a waterfront neighborhood that's home to several historic ships visitors can tour, Adventure Aquarium, and the Independence Seaport Museum
  • 16-minute drive to Philadelphia International Airport

Sophisticated rooms with impressive technology features

The rooms are an upscale blend of classic and contemporary. The classic elements include dark wood furniture, two-poster beds, and leather wingback chairs, while the clean lines, red and gold color accents (red and cold curtains, patterned red bed runners, gold pillows), and high-tech features are more modern.

Bathrooms are sleek if a bit small.

  • Big flat-screen TVs with media hubs for laptop hookup
  • iPads with digital concierge services
  • Cuisinart coffeemakers
  • Hilton Serenity Beds
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Alarm clocks with iPod hookups
  • Room service from early morning 'til late night
  • Sleek (if smallish) bathrooms with Peter Thomas Roth toiletries and shower/tub combos
  • Work desks with ample electrical outlets
