Bottom Line

The four-pearl Sheraton Society Hill is in the Old City of Philadelphia -- one of America’s most historic neighborhoods -- and very close to public transportation, making it convenient for tourists and business guests alike. The hotel has 17 meeting rooms, a business center, and a Club Lounge, plus an indoor pool and hot tub, a restaurant, and a Starbucks. Its 364 rooms include flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers, though some rooms have trendy decorative details while others feel more generic and dated. And there's a fee for in-room Wi-Fi. Travelers may want to compare rates with the nearby Hilton Philadelphia at Penn’s Landing, which boasts that it’s the only waterfront hotel in Philadelphia.

Oyster Hotel Review

Elegant hotel that attracts business travelers and tourists

Sheraton Society Hill is housed in a large red brick building that covers almost an entire street block. It underwent renovations in 2013, though managed to maintain the historic elegance of the surrounding Old City. The lobby has a large atrium with a skylight that looks over a green-and-navy patterned carpet with sleek tables and clusters of plush gray, cream, or white chairs. It’s a warm and inviting area with stately elegance. Off the atrium is a Starbucks and a long, sleek wooden front desk with a marble top, plus a few parlors, one with blue walls with cream patterned wallpapered panels, built-in shelves displaying white decorative pieces, black-and-white photographs, and pictures of dogs dressed in men’s colonial clothes. The hotel’s restaurant has a chic decor that differs in color and style from room to room, though all have wooden tables, trendy chairs, mirrors, and hanging lights. It’s a mixed crowd here, as some are in the area on business, while others are families and couples attracted to the hotel’s convenient location near historic attractions.

Old City location within walking distance of historical attractions

The Sheraton Society Hill is located next to Old City, making it convenient for tourists to explore the area, and there are plenty of dining options on nearby streets. Independence Hall is a nine-minute walk away, as is the Liberty Bell. It’s a 14-minute walk to the National Constitution Center, while Washington Square Park is nine minutes away on foot. For those looking to travel to other parts of Philadelphia, it’s a six-minute walk to the nearest metro station. Philadelphia International Airport is a 22-minute drive away.

Modern rooms with flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers, some with Murphy beds

Guest rooms at this Sheraton are a mixed bag. All have dark wooden furniture, cream walls and curtains, and a worn maroon carpet that makes for a basic, somewhat drab background. But some rooms are spruced up by trendy design details like white leather headboards, octagonal mirrors, and framed silhouette portraits. All rooms are spacious and have flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers, but there's an extra fee for Wi-Fi. Suites have separate living rooms with leather couches and plush chairs. Traditional Guest Rooms have Murphy beds that fold out from the walls, allowing space for leather couches. Club Rooms also provide free bottled water and Club Lounge access. The cream-tiled bathrooms aren’t particularly spacious, but they do have dark wooden vanities with white countertops, shower/tub combos, and hairdryers.

Pool, hot tub, restaurant, and extensive meeting facilities

True to its upscale nature, the Sheraton Society Hill has a heated indoor pool and hot tub with a lovely glass skylight. There’s also a large, sunny fitness center with a separate room for the many cardio machines with TVs, plus another room that holds the weights, mats, and exercise balls. The hotel’s signature restaurant, Taste, serves American classics for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a number of local craft brews and international wines at its bar, Paired. There’s a breakfast buffet for a fee, and room service is available for most of the day. There's also an on-site Starbucks and a gift shop that sells snacks and souvenirs. The hotel has extensive, fully equipped meeting facilities with 17 rooms, plus a comprehensive business center next to the Starbucks with four public computers and a printer. Sheraton Club Members and Club Room guests get free access to the Club Lounge, which serves breakfast in the morning and appetizers in the afternoon. The lounge also has business services and free Wi-Fi. There’s a Hertz car rental on-site and valet parking for a fee in the garage. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby, but there's a fee to use it in the rooms.
