  • Sunny apartments feature basic kitchenettes and balconies
  • Small snack bar has poolside seating
  • Daily entertainment for kids and adults

Cons

  • Basic, dated rooms have small tube TVs

  • A 15-minute walk from a small, average beach
  • Fee for Wi-Fi and use of in-room safes

Bottom Line

The 145-room Bouganvillia is an aging family-friendly property showing significant wear and tear. Rooms are sunny but dated, with decor straight out of the 80s and basic amenities such as small tube TVs. The pools, with daily entertainment and two separate sections -- one with slides for kids and one for adults -- are the highlights here. The restaurant is a tad drab and overpriced, and the basketball court feels as if it has been neglected for years. The hotel's location -- a 15-minute walk from a small beach and even farther from the city center -- is not the most convenient either. However, rates are generally low and rooms feature small, basic kitchenettes and beds for up to four guests, which can be a plus for families on a tight budget.

Oyster Hotel Review

Scene

A dated property with basic amenities

A large stone sign with the hotel’s name, and a red path lined with white columns, mark the entrance of this budget property. The white zigzagging building is a bit nondescript, but the variety of plants lining the front door add some charm. Overall, however, it is readily apparent that the property has not been renovated or redecorated in decades. The first impression on walking through the glass doors and into the lobby is of a hotel that is stuck in the 80s. Floors in different shades of red and black, golden lamps and tables, and imitation leather armchairs with mismatching upholstering in yellow make the lobby feel old-fashioned and drab. Rooms, with basic furniture and dated upholstering with orange, red and green patterns, have the same feel. However, the pool deck, complete with a kids' section with several slides, is pleasant and a fun spot for families.

Location

A 15-minute walk from a small beach and the city center

The hotel is located between a playground and an apartment building on a small one-way street. The immediate vicinity is mostly residential, but there is a small square with bars and cafes a short walk away, and those looking to cook in their rooms can find a shop with the basics right next door. The nearest spot for a dip in the Mediterranean is a small cove located a 15-minute walk down the street. It is a little rocky and there isn’t much space for sunbathing, but it’s a good spot for snorkeling. Santa Ponsa’s main beach is a little farther away, about 20 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by car. Palma and the airport can be reached in just under half an hour.

Rooms

All rooms have furnished balconies and basic kitchenettes, but they are dated and can be tight.

The hotel has 145 small studios and one-bedroom apartments, all with balconies furnished with plastic chairs and clothes racks. Decor is dated throughout with basic wooden furniture and red, orange and green striped upholstering that has seen better days. All units have small, lightly stocked kitchenettes complete with mini-fridges, sinks, and either cooktops or hotplates, and small bathrooms with shower/tub combos. Each studio has a double bed and sleeper sofa, and each apartment has a separate bedroom with an additional double bed. Aside from the cooking facilities, all rooms have small tube TVs, basic toiletries, and safes (for a fee). Wi-Fi is available for an extra charge.

Features

Two pools, daily entertainment, a kids’ club, a snack bar, and a basketball court

The Ola Apartments Bouganvillia is overall no-frills, but the pool deck is a pleasant spot for a fun morning in the sun. The main pool offers entertainment and music throughout the day, and the children’s pool has two slides that kids seem to love. Adjacent to the pool is the snack bar, serving average and overpriced drinks, pizza, and burgers. Additionally, the hotel offers a kids’ club complete with a playground, game room with arcade machines for teens, and aging basketball court.
