The mid-range BQ Alcudia Sun Village is a family-oriented complex located in the quiet Playa de Muro resort halfway along Alcudia Bay. The property is set on the edge of a nature reserve (meaning mosquitos can be an issue), though within easy reach of dining and the lovely long beach. Rooms and apartments are bright and all equipped for at least basic cooking, plus some have lake-view balconies. Children are particularly well-catered for -- with kids' clubs, playgrounds, and pirate-themed splash park -- while a large lagoon-style pool is large enough for everyone. Travelers preferring sea views, however, should consider the Iberostar Albufera Playa, which also has more for adults in the form of spa facilities.
Low-rise, family-friendly complex with friendly village atmosphere
The BQ Alcudia Sun Village is a pleasantly secluded, very family-friendly complex made up of clusters of two-story apartments and a central pool terrace; all of which combines for a village-like feel. The reception is a smart blend of polished marble-clad walls and floors, with modern comfy seating and potted plants that break up the rather bland beige color scheme. Accommodation is spread between two parts, whitewashed buildings overlooking the spacious pool area and a pastel-pink section that backs onto a canal fed from a nearby lake (which can mean a few mosquitos).
The extensive grounds mostly consist of manicured lawns dotted with volcanic rocks and palm trees, and lined with hedgerows, plus more rugged-looking scrubland. Clientele are primarily families who opt for the all-inclusive plan, and the vibe is generally friendly and relaxed.
Quiet and leafy neighborhood in Playa de Muro, short walk from the beach
The hotel is located in the secluded and relatively sedate resort of Playa de Muro, just south of the larger and more popular Port d'Alcudia and halfway along its huge bay. As well as a mini-market and a couple eateries, the immediate surrounds include a small lake, canals, and the edge of the Alcudia nature reserve. It's also just a five-minute walk from the main road lined with tourist shops, mini-markets, and restaurants, and one block farther to the long picturesque sandy beach. The family-friendly Hidropark is a 10-minute drive away or the scenic cobbled streets of Alcudia town are about 15. It's also about an hour by road from the island's capital of Palma, and Palma de Mallorca Airport is the same distance.
Bright and cheerful interiors with cooking facilities and outdoor spaces
The complex has 207 Standard Rooms, and One-Bedroom and Two-Bedroom Apartments, all of which are brightly decorated in blond-wood furniture, coordinating yellow fabrics, and modern art prints that have a cheerful effect. Rooms open to furnished balconies or terraces, mostly overlooking the gardens, though with some offering views over the nearby lake. While mosquitos can be a pest, the hotel lights citronella candles to help. Rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, kettles, and coffeemakers, while apartments have separate living areas with sofa beds, dining tables, and kitchenettes. Kitchenettes add stovetops, sinks, toasters, and cookware.
Other amenities include air-conditioning and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with a good selection of English-speaking channels, but in-room Wi-Fi is not available and safes require a fee. Bathrooms are modern and spacious, featuring walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads, wall-mounted hairdryers, and chain-brand toiletries.
Loads for kids, including pirate-themed splash park and bouncy castle
Facilities at BQ Alcudia Sun Village are geared toward children. A huge lagoon-style swimming pool can get busy, though it's large enough even at peak times and loungers are plentiful. A separate kiddy pool is also available, as well as a pirate-themed splash park with slides and water features. There are additionally a kids' club for all ages (teens during the summer only), a bouncy castle, mini-disco, and playground. Other leisure facilities include tennis and multi-use courts, mini-golf, volleyball, billiards, and ping-pong. Wi-Fi is only available for free around reception area.
The hotel's bright and spacious buffet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including some live cooking and regular themed nights. It extends to an alfresco terrace overlooking the grounds, plus lunch is also available at the bar under a covered poolside patio. Guests report food is plentiful and good quality, if lacking a little in variety. A second bar offers a solid range of drinks (including cocktails) and a stage with evening entertainment, mostly aimed at kids. Weekly barbecues are put on during warmer months.
Outdoor lunch buffet plus some premium-brand alcohol
The optional all-inclusive plan covers the buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with some live cooking and four themed nights every fortnight. Self-service drinks are provided during lunch and dinner, including house wines, Spanish beer, soft drinks, and mineral waters. Lunch is also served at the outdoor buffet by the pool, and snacks are served at selected times between meals. Spanish draft beer, wine, and spirits, and international soft drinks are served in the two bars and include some premium-brand drinks and cocktails. All entertainment and kids' club is also covered, and Wi-Fi is free around reception.
