Bottom Line

The Tides Beach Club in Kennebunkport was fully renovated in 2011, and the vibe evolved from cozy to South Beach-esque and trendy. Two suites designed by Jonathan Adler, spectacular ocean views, and a contemporary restaurant with a sophisticated menu are just some of the upgrades that came with the renovation. The prices are a bit more Manhattan than Maine, but if it's beachfront luxury you’re after, this is it -- The Tides sits on a semi-private three-mile stretch of Goose Rocks Beach.

A renovated historic inn with a trendy feel

Built in 1899 and owned originally by Emma Foss, what is now known as the Tides Beach Club has been operating as a hotel and inn (under different names) for over 100 years. In 2011, the Kennebunkport Resort Collection purchased the building and renovated it completely. The details of the original architecture were maintained, while modern features were added, such as flat-screen televisions, Wi-Fi, and luxury showers. Suites designed by Jonathan Adler were also created.

Some guests feel that the hip and trendy renovations have turned a cozy inn into something more appropriate for South Beach, but that really depends on your preferences. Sure, this isn’t your typical New England inn with antiques everywhere and a stuffy atmosphere, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

These days, Tides Beach Club is a place for relaxing in beachside luxury. The lobby features beach-chic decor with comfortable couches and chairs, white woodwork, and hardwood floors. Adjacent to the lobby is the restaurant with a curved bar and ambient lighting (particularly pretty at night). And just across the street is Goose Rocks Beach, a wide expanse of sand and surf.

A residential area across the street from Goose Rocks Beach

Located in a residential neighborhood across the street from Goose Rocks Beach, Tides Beach Club is a short drive from Dock Square in downtown Kennebunkport. So you get the calming beach atmosphere with restaurants and nightlife very close by.

Famous for being the summer home for George H.W. Bush, Kennebunkport is a quaint Maine town chock full of shops, galleries, restaurants, and beautiful coastlines. While other parts of Maine are accessible by public transportation such as buses and trains, Kennebunkport is an area where you’ll definitely need a car to get around. It’s not a bad jumping off point for visiting other towns, either. Check out Ogunquit, known for its long stretches of sandy beaches and as Maine’s biggest LGBT destination. Or head south to York to check out the famed Neddick Lighthouse.

If you crave a little more city life, head north and you’ll hit Portland, the largest city in Maine. There you can visit the historic Old Port district along the Harbor, or the Arts District along Congress Street and get your fill of food, shopping, and sightseeing. Foodies will appreciate Portland’s love for food and the abundance of great restaurants. Nature lovers will enjoy the many historic parks within the city. Or, if sports are your thing, catch a Portland Sea Dogs (one of the Red Sox farm teams) game during the season.

  • 110-minute drive to Boston Logan International Airport
  • 30-second walk to Goose Neck Beach (across the street)
  • 15-minute drive to downtown Kennebunkport
  • 25-minute drive to Old Orchard Beach
  • 35-minute drive to Ogunquit
  • 40-minute drive to York
  • 40-minute drive to Portland

Contemporary coastal decor with modern features

Lots of whites and tans, with punches of color (aqua and coral), give the rooms at Tides Beach Club a chic beach vibe. The beds are comfortable, with luxurious Frette linens, and the bathrooms are modern, though small.

Rooms vary in size, and if you don't fork over the extra cash, you may end up with a too-small room. But the ocean view from some of these rooms is spectacular.

There are also two suites, designed by Jonathan Adler, which are large and offer the best views.

  • Air conditioning
  • Malin and Goetz bath products
  • Flat-screen TVs
  • Comfy beds with Frette linens
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Marble rain showers
  • Some rooms have ocean views, others have views of the property
  • Suites were designed by Jonathan Adler

The beach is the main attraction at Tides.

  • Oceanfront location on Goose Rocks Beach (hotel staff there to assist with chairs, etc.)
  • Tide Beach Club Restaurant and Bar serves seafood, meat, and typical Maine lobster.
  • Beach cruisers available for guest use
  • Priority reservations at Earth, sister resort Hidden Pond's restaurant
  • Access to features at Hidden Pond's fitness center, pool, and spa, as well as features at Cottages at Cabot Cove and Kennebunkport Inn.
