Bottom Line

The Chester Residence easily provides some of the most luxurious self-catering apartment accommodation you'll find in Edinburgh. The 23 apartments are crammed full of high-end gadgetry and top-of-the-range kitchen appliances, and finished with sharp, designer styling with a masculine edge. They're spacious too and while some open to gardens, others have views over the city -- though no elevators means some leg-work is required to access these. The location is pleasant, though the city's bustling center is beyond walking distance. While rates are inevitably high, the attention to detail and sheer level of luxury makes these a great deal for those wanting to splash out.

Scene

Smart, contemporary apartments in Georgian townhouse terrace

The Chester Residence comprises a terrace row of four identical Georgian townhouses, their typical Craigleith stone facades adorned with pretty iron railings and elegant trios of arches. Initial entry is via an intercom, and stepping inside the luxury nature of the property is immediately apparent. Interiors are impeccably presented, high-ceilinged hallways decorated with ornate coving, smart neutral tones, and tasteful, contemporary design furnishings create a mood of sophisticated modernity. The reception room is small-but-perfectly-formed with a long desk of uncluttered polished black stone, while handsome spindle staircases with sleek wooden and wrought iron banisters wind up the building's four fours -- but be aware there's no elevator. The atmosphere has a masculine slant, but is relaxed and polished.

Location

Set in Edinburgh's relatively quiet and affluent West End -- though away from the tourist center

The hotel is located in a relatively quiet and affluent neighborhood in Edinburgh's West End district surrounded by well-heeled residences and most of the city's foreign embassies. The Haymarket area is a five-minute walk away and has numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars while the start of Princes Street shopping is just under 10 minutes on foot. The bustling heart of the city -- including the Edinburgh Castle and the famous Royal Mile -- are not within walking distance so visitors without cars would have to rely on cabs or public transport. Local buses run about every 10 minutes into the center and take about 20 minutes, alternatively it's around a 10-minute taxi ride.

Rooms

Chic, modern apartments with high-end tech and plenty of space

The Chester Residence has 23 apartments spread over five floors, all finished to a high spec with contemporary designer styling and plenty of luxury touches. High-tech gadgetry including iPod docks, free and fast Wi-Fi, and large flat-screen TVs with Sky channels and DVD players is available while guests also have access to a DVD library of the latest movies. Apartments vary in size, however the smallest is over 800 square feet, and all include kitchens with top-of-the-range appliances (though cookware was limited in some). Higher-level apartments have lovely views over the city -- though require climbing several flights of stairs -- and some basement units have garden access with grills. One unit, the Owners Residence, even features a home cinema and jetted tub with built-in TVs.

Features

Concierge service to arrange in-room massage and transport

There's little in the way of facilities outside of the gorgeous apartments at the Chester Residence. The hotel, however, does offer a selection of fruit, pastries, breads, and juices delivered to the door for breakfast. In-room spa treatments, airport pick-ups, and chauffeur hire service can also all be organized through the concierge service at reception. Parking, however, is very limited and the local car park is expensive. There is a cozy lounge on-site with dark decor and warm lighting where drinks and coffee are served.
