Bottom Line

The Jurys Inn Edinburgh is a mid-range, 186-room hotel located next to Edinburgh's main train station. Set on a relatively quiet road around the corner from the Royal Mile, the location is excellent for exploring the city center on foot with the castle just 10 minutes away. Although a bit dated in parts, interiors are well-maintained and rooms are perfectly adequate with flat-screen TVs and tea kettles -- some even have great views of Calton Hill. Besides some soundproofing issues between rooms, this is a solid all-around hotel with rates that are hard to beat for the location.

60s era concrete building

Edinburgh's Jurys Inn occupies an imposing though unremarkable 60s housing block whose concrete and glass facade stands in stark contrast to its typical stone-built neighbors. Opened in 1998, the lobby bares much of the look and feel of the time, though is bright, spacious, and well-maintained. It features large floor-to-ceiling windows with some fine views of Calton Hill opposite. Interiors throughout are unmistakably of the mid-range, chain-hotel variety while the vibe is welcoming though professional. Clientele lean heavily towards business guests during the week while weekends tend to attract couples in town for a short break.

Excellent location in relatively quiet street next to the train station

The hotel has an excellent location in the heart of Edinburgh located just off the famous Royal Mile and two minutes' walk from the main train station. While centrally located, it's set a little away from most of the bustle of the city center; there are shops and restaurants within walking distance. Edinburgh Castle is about 15 minutes away on foot and Calton Hill -- with excellent and iconic views over the city -- is less than a mile away. Holyrood Park, with Arthur's Seat, is also easily walkable at about a half-mile away, while the International Conference Centre is a five-minute cab journey.

Standard mid-range rooms with free Wi-Fi -- some with great views

The hotel's 186 rooms are decorated in a typical modern chain-hotel styling with simple wooden furnishings and purple carpets, curtains, and throws. Free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with Freeview (not satellite/cable) come standard while simple, clean bathrooms have shower/tub combos, wall-mounted soap dispensers, and hairdryers. Higher-level, street-facing rooms have excellent views of the city and Calton Hill. Decent double-glazing means external noise is kept to a minimum, however there have been reports of poor soundproofing between rooms. Some rooms are also beginning to show signs of wear and could use a refresh.

Buffet breakfast and Costa Coffee overlooking Calton Hill

The hotel provides a hot and cold buffet breakfast each morning in its pleasant restaurant -- though its not generally included in the rate. A menu of off-the-grill dishes is also served for lunch and dinner, but is on the pricey side. The hotel bar serves drinks and a lighter menu, while Costa Coffee products are available throughout the day. Both bar and restaurant have great views over the North Bridge and Calton Hill. Five meeting rooms are on-site for business guests and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
