Bottom Line

The 60-room Hotel Indigo is an upmarket boutique occupying a row of period Georgian properties in the New Town of Edinburgh. Interiors are colorful, hip, and contemporary throughout, especially in the impressive bar and restaurant. Rooms follow the same smart, funky decor scheme and offer flat-screen TVs along with sleek walk-in showers -- though internal soundproofing can be an issue. Overall it's a standout property with a particular attention to design. Price-wise it's usually somewhere between the pricier Twelve Picardy Place and cheaper The Place -- both nearby. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Scene

Funky and colorful boutique set in a Georgian terrace

Opened in 2012, the Hotel Indigo's period facade stretches the length of the five Georgian townhouses the property now occupies -- each once belonging to a notable Edinburgh family. A modern frosted glass portico marks the entrance and sets the tone for this boutique whose interiors put a real emphasis on creative, colorful, and characterful styling. The lobby is a bold and quirky blend of vibrant colors, quirky contemporary design pieces, and modern takes on traditional touches that evoke a both homey and hip ambience. While the funky decor also extends to its bar and restaurant and throughout its five floors, plenty of original features have been retained imbuing a real sense of the building's 18th-century heritage.

Location

Set on a main road in Edinburgh's New Town, half a mile from Waverly Station

The Hotel Indigo is located on a fairly busy main road in Edinburgh's New Town well within walking distance of plenty of bars, pubs, and restaurants and just round the corner from the St James shopping mall and John Lewis department store. The famous cobbled streets around Edinburgh's Royal Mile are less than 15 minutes away on foot, while just in front of the hotel's entrance are bus and tram stops that connect to the historic city center and main tourist attractions. Waverly Station -- Edinburgh's main train station -- is also just half a mile from the hotel.

Rooms

Chic and funky rooms with plenty of tech and luxury touches

The hotel has 60 rooms all of which follow the chic and funky styling of the rest of the property, with shimmering fabrics, warm wood floors, and hip contemporary design motifs. Even standard amenities are impressive and include media hubs for connecting an assortment of devices and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with international satellite channels. Luxury touches also include Egyptian cotton bed linen and bathrobes, while minibars have soft drinks and snacks free of charge. Contemporary bathrooms are also very nicely finished with spacious walk-in rainfall showers with integrated speakers and Aveda toiletries. Double glazing also ensures noise from the busy road is kept to a minimum, however there have been reports of soundproofing issues between rooms. Wi-Fi is free.

Features

Whisky sampling and Afternoon Tea with homemade Scottish cakes

The boutique nature of the property means that there's not a great deal in the way of facilities on-site. However, the hotel's Turquoise Thistle restaurant stands out as a particularly fine example of its kind, serving quality selection of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in characteristically chic surrounds. Its cool, contemporary bar provides specially picked whisky selections as well as light meals and bar snacks. Afternoon Tea is also a hotel highlight offering traditional Scottish cakes and homemade scones with specialty teas and coffees. A small fitness room provides equipment for guests to work out and Wi-Fi is free of charge throughout the hotel.
