Bottom Line

Situated on The Royal Mile between Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns, this 136-room upscale hotel is ideally located for both tourists and business travelers. Formerly known as Hotel Missoni Edinburgh, the G&V now has ramped-up amenities and -- as of spring 2015 -- plans to redecorate. Rooms come in many sizes and feature a variety of amenities, and all are vibrantly decorated. Although it has an excellent restaurant and a small spa, the G&V is less charming than some of the more classically appointed luxury hotels in the area, and it lacks a pool. Travelers could compare this property with the ultra-stylish and upscale Le Monde Edinburgh.

Oyster Hotel Review

Scene

A punchy property with loud colors and lots of stripes

Situated in a six-floor building that looks new and a little bland among the soot-covered ancient stone buildings surrounding it, this hotel -- formerly the Hotel Missoni Edinburgh -- features the style of legendary Italian fashion house Missoni (although plans to redecorate are underway as of spring 2015). The reception comprises individual, cylinder-shaped desks with metallic fringe. There are a lot of colorful stripes found in the decor throughout the hotel, marking the enormous vases flanking the glass doors of the entrance, the walls of the elevators, the carpets in the hallways, and throughout the rooms. Walls are painted vibrant greens, pinks, purples, and oranges and the upholstery ranges from black-and-white white polka dots on the love seats to wire-frame bright red bar stools.

The bar has a space-age look to it, with bulbous steel orb lights hanging from the ceiling and a wall of pastel-colored planet photos. The restaurant, Cucina, has a more mutedly modern look, with simple black tables, small black-and-white-checked booth seating, and a compact outdoor patio set between ancient stone walls. The clientele is a balanced mix of tourists and business travelers, with just a few families.

Location

On The Royal Mile, convenient to attractions, the Edinburgh Castle, and the railway station

The Hotel is located in the heart of Old Town and next to New Town, on the corner of George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile. The surrounding block is full of pubs, restaurants, shops, night clubs, and monuments. Edinburgh Castle and the bus and train stations are within a five-minute walk. The National Gallery of Scotland is a two-minute walk down the road, and the University of Edinburgh is about a seven-minute walk. Edinburgh Airport takes around 25 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Well-equipped, vibrant rooms, and great views from higher floors

The overall color scheme of the hotel's 136 rooms is vibrant and dominated by greens, purples, and yellows. Rooms come in a variety of sizes, from the smallest Cosy level to several large Suites. Even the most basic rooms have lovely hardwood flooring, silver-painted headboards, framed artwork, and designer furniture and pillows, Nespresso machines, and mini-fridges. There's free Wi-Fi in every room. Some rooms, especially those on the higher floors, have amazing views of the east and north side of the city, including Edinburgh Castle. Modern bathrooms have slick purple vinyl walls and shiny black tile floors, but some are on the small side, with tiny toilets, no counter space, and walk-in showers but no tubs.

Features

Fabulous restaurant, and bar and spa, but no pool

The G&V has most of the amenities one would expect of an upscale hotel, with the exception of a swimming pool. The hotel restaurant, Cucina, serves gourmet Italian fare at lunch and dinner along with an afternoon tea featuring freshly baked cakes and pastries. Buffet and a la carte breakfasts are available in the morning, with full Scottish options, but they aren't included in all room rates. There's also a bar with a wide variety of wines and whiskeys. And room service is available throughout the day and into the evening.

The hotel has a brightly colored fitness center with high-end machinery as well as a small spa offering a long list of massages and beauty treatments. Several meeting and private dining rooms can be rented out for special events. Parking is available on-site although it's subject to a daily fee. The front desk is open 24 hours, and staff can arrange tours, airport transfers, and laundry/dry cleaning services.
