The two-and-a-half pearl aletto Kudamm caters to a younger crowd of budget travelers in the heart of western Berlin. It's on a busy street right near the major Zoologischer Garten train station and, as the Kudamm moniker suggests, it's within walking distance to trendy Kurfürstendamm avenue's shopping. The rooms are clean and functional and have some of the lowest rates around. There are also a number of group bunk rooms and a separate hostel area for backpackers with a communal kitchen. On-site bars are a plus as are numerous games and social activities for travelers looking to make new friends. The Circus Hotel and Circus Hostel, across the street from each other in the city center, are well worth looking into, but unlike this hotel, they have no in-room air-conditioning.
Built in 2012, this socially-driven budget hotel is full of communal spaces designed to bring people together. Floor-to-ceiling windows brighten the lobby, filled with mid-century modernist furnishings like Barcelona chairs and arc floor lamps. Large lounge areas continue the aesthetic with hardwood floors and seemingly unending minimalist seating with lime green accents. The rooftop bar is downright stylish. It's decorated with wooden benches, bright red umbrellas, and high bar stools. Views of Berlin are almost uninterrupted from up there.
In central West Berlin, near shopping, the zoo, and nightlife; close to train and airports as well
Located in the heart of West Berlin, the hotel is within walking distance of Kurfürstendamm, the Berlin Zoo, and the train station Zoologischer Garten, with U-bahn and S-Bahn stops nearby. There’s a thriving party scene with many bars and restaurants nearby as well, especially around Savignyplatz. Berlin is Germany’s capital and largest city, best known for its lively nightlife (restaurants and bars stay open late), cafes, museums, palaces, street art, and historic sights. Tegel Airport is less than 15 minutes northwest by car and Schönefeld Airport is about 25 minutes southeast.
Simple and functional with clean private bathrooms
Despite the decor's pink and purple accents, all the rooms have a utilitarian quality bordering on that of a college dormitory. The beds, all twins either separate or pushed together as "doubles," have individual reading lights and shelves -- a thoughtful touch. Tiny desks have accompanying red Lucite chairs with more shelving/storage areas nearby. The Group Rooms are similarly outfitted, but filled with stacks of twin bunk beds, which larger Family Rooms also have. All units (save the shared hostel rooms) have clean private bathrooms with walk-in showers that have handheld showerheads but limited counter space for personal belongings. The separate hostel "backpacker" area has shared bunk rooms and bathroom facilities.
Rooftop bar, outdoor sports facilities, and communal hostel kitchen
The rooftop terrace offers city views and a small bar that's open seasonally. A second bar in the lobby serves booze, snacks, and coffee, and it stays open late. For more substantial food, the hotel serves a breakfast buffet, but after that there's little more around than vending machines, though one of them dispenses salami and Margherita pizzas in about three minutes. On-site entertainment includes billiards and a foosball table, along with an outdoor courtyard that has table tennis, a small enclosed soccer court, and a basketball court. There's also a sandy kids' playground with swings and a slide. More serious amenities consist of a business center with three computers and a small meeting room. The separate backpacker's area is in the basement, with a communal kitchen, bathrooms, and guest laundry. Wi-Fi is free, but spotty.
