Bottom Line

The clue is in the name at the Acropolis View Hotel, where views of Athens' iconic monument are as good as its proximity to it. This lower-middle-range property offers 32 rooms with flat-screen TVs, free continental breakfasts, a 24-hour lobby bar, and a lovely rooftop terrace with panoramic views. Excellent positioning a stone's throw from the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Filopappou Hill makes it a winning pick for sightseeing travelers, and low rates are attractive. Interiors are a basic mix of dated and contemporary, but all considered, it's an excellent value choice. A touch pricier, the Acropolis Hill Hotel adds in a pool.

Scene

Straightforward property with winning views, right by the Acropolis

Budget accommodation in Athens can often mean compromising on location, with travelers ending up in outskirts or seedy neighborhoods, but that's not the case here. Set a few blocks from the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Filopappou Hill, the Acropolis View Hotel stands out for its prime location, modest prices, and picturesque views. The views are straight-on from many rooms and the furnished rooftop terrace (and particularly impressive at night), although simple setups mean guests need to take drinks up from the 24-hour lobby bar themselves. Sadly, 1981-opened interiors are less impressive. The lobby's earth-toned armchairs, coffee tables, and worn sofas have a tired and dated look, but the room is bright from large windows overlooking cascading greenery. Artifacts in glass cases give a nod to the location, and the marble front desk adds a touch of class, continuing in stairwells (there's also an elevator). The old-fashioned look continues in the downstairs bar and breakfast room. Overall, this is is a great pick for value-minded travelers looking to be near the main sights.

Location

Quiet location, right by the Acropolis and Parthenon

Travelers choose the hotel for its stellar location. Its small residential street is removed from crowds, but walks take a maximum of six minutes to reach the Acropolis, Parthenon, Theatre of Dionysus, and Filopappou Hill. The latter lies to the west, while the former three are reached via the famous Dionysiou Areopagitou walkway, which encircles historic sites. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus and Art Museum of Jewellery Elias Lalaounis are four minutes away on foot. Historic Plaka district is a 10-minute walk, while Monastiraki flea market, Syntagma Square, and Ermou's shopping are six minutes farther. The Acropoli metro station is an eight-minute walk. Restaurants aren't plentiful here, but they're endless on the other side of the Acropolis (15 minutes on foot). It's rare for us to stress the hotel's address, but this one can be hard to find -- you want to head to 10 Webster, corner of Webster and Robertou Galli Streets. Athens International Airport is a 34-minute drive, or 90 minutes direct to Syntagma Square with the X95 bus.

Rooms

Simple rooms in good condition; worth the upgrade for Acropolis views

Simple rooms reflect the value rate, but they're bright, air-conditioned, and in good condition from 2016 refurbishments. They have light walls, dark carpets, striped drapes, blond-wood furniture and paneling, and beige bedding with slate-gray runners. Bare walls and tiny sconce reading lights have a budget chain feel, but amenities are good for the pearl rating. Phones, desks, satellite flat-screen TVs, empty mini-fridges, and hairdryers come standard, alongside small en-suite bathrooms with stall showers, mirrors, toiletries, and towels. No in-room tea- and coffee-making facilities or safes are provided, although reception can store valuables.

Alongside smaller Singles, Twin/Double Rooms measure 161 square feet (15 square meters). Larger Triple Rooms with three beds are ideal for groups or families. Upgraded rooms with balconies have sensational Acropolis views, with alternatives overlooking the street. Note, some guests have complained of noise in rooms, either from thin walls or rooftop activity. Rooms can be fitted with cribs.

Features

Free breakfast, 24-hour bar, and roof terrace with Acropolis views

Features are limited, but they're reasonable for the low rate. Served buffet-style in a small breakfast room outfitted in woods, Grecian carvings, and sculptures, the free morning spread offers hard-boiled eggs, continental options, Greek yogurts, fresh fruit, tea, coffee, and juice. No other meals are offered, but the adjacent bar is open 24/7. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, nuts, and potato chips are all it serves, but guests can take purchases onto the roof terrace, which is the property's highlight and is open 24/7). This pleasant space is furnished with wrought-iron chairs and light marble-topped tables, and panoramic views encompassing the Acropolis and city are sensational. The lobby offers an indoor lounge with TV, and the 24-hour front desk can arrange laundry services (at a fee). Travelers tend to be without vehicles, but the hotel has a free space for guests, and street parking is mostly free. Pets are not permitted. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
