Modeled after the "capsule hotels" from Japan, with small rooms and largely automated service, citizenM Amsterdam City has a mega-cool feel and chic design features at affordable prices. The tech-savvy rooms are pod-like in design, and the open-plan lobby mixes retro and futuristic styles. The hotel also has a 24-hour canteen and lobby iMac center. Although the location is a little far from tourist attractions, a tram stop is adjacent to the property for access to the rest of the city.
Housed in a distinctive square building of glass and metal, the citizenM (the “M” stands for "mobile") is true to its name with its spacious open-plan lobby where "citizens of the world" guests can mix and mingle. Filled with natural light, the lobby library and living room features a Warhol print, bright colors of red, white, and lime green, soft seating, black lacquer bookshelves, and a retro-meets-futuristic look with Vitro furnishings.
The 24-hour self-service canteen features a glowing red entrance, red rug, and orange and purple chairs. Instead of a traditional check-in area, the citizenM has self-service kiosks, with service "ambassadors" nearby to help. Rooms up the cool quotient with their capsule-like design. The hotel draws young and hip tourists to its funky decor and relative affordability, but the business crowd also comes due to the proximity of the World Trade Center.
A bit far from the city center, but next to the tram and Zuid Station
CitizenM is located in a business and industrial area in the south of Amsterdam, next to the leafy Beatrixpark and the Prinses Irenestraat/Beethovenstraat tram. The Number 5 tram takes about 10 minutes to get to the Museum Quarter, which is about a mile north. The World Trade Center and Amsterdam Zuid Station is a short walk southwest across the Beethovenstraat. Anne Frank House and Dam Square are both more than two miles north. Schiphol Amsterdam Airport is a 20-minute drive southwest, and is accessible by train from Zuid Station as well.
Minimalist, pod-like rooms with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi
The 215 pod-like rooms at the citizenM are exactly identical, made off-site, and stacked on top of each other on five floors in a square building. Done all in white with laminate hardwood floors, the rooms are small. But the space is efficiently used, even with a plush king-sized bed (with Italian linens). Rooms are completely soundproofed. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, free movies, and an innovative electronic "mood pad" to control ambient lighting, blinds, temperature, and music. Another neat feature: The plastic room key can be turned into a luggage tag.
Drawbacks: The toilet and rain shower are in the center of the room, with opaque glass over the toilet and see-through glass and a curtain covering the shower. Privacy is thus somewhat compromised. Also there’s no real closet, with just hooks on the wall for hanging clothes.
Continental breakfast (for a fee), 24-hour canteen, and lobby iMac stations
CitizenM has no pool or sauna or other recreational facilities on-site. It does, however, offer discounted rates at a nearby gym. A self-service canteen operates day and night and offers drinks, ready-made salads, sandwiches, sushi, and microwaveable meals. The 24-hour staffed bar serves beer, wine, cocktails, and coffee drinks. The breakfast (for a fee) offers croissants, yogurt, and muesli, among other items. Several iMacs are available in the lobby for guest computer needs. Hotel service "ambassadors" are also ready to assist with travel plans, with free city maps and transportation tickets for sale.
