Bottom Line

The mid-range Campanile Amsterdam is a budget-friendly hotel located right by a metro station that gives access to the city center in 20 minutes. Its 74 rooms are generally clean and comfortable, with flat-screen TVs and tea/coffee facilities, but they're sparsely decorated and lack air-conditioning and safes. Free on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, and a restaurant/bar that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner add value and overall convenience for guests, even though the breakfast costs a fee. The price is hard to beat, but leisure travelers seeking something closer to the city center might want to check out Hotel Europa 92, which offers free breakfast.

Oyster Hotel Review

Scene

Modern motel with a rustic style and a diverse clientele

The Campanile Amsterdam is housed in a four-story motel-like building, with exterior hallways that give direct access to rooms. The property attracts a diverse clientele looking to save some money while avoiding the bustle of the city center. The reception area is small, with a rustic feel thanks to exposed brick walls, mosaic-style coffee-colored floor tiles, and a reception desk made up of wood, mirrors, and gray tiles. With only two small tables and a few chairs, the lobby serves just as a place to check in or head to the adjoining restaurant. The brick walls and mosaic floors extend to the restaurant, which has a similar look with wooden tables and chairs, photographs of nature scenes, and potted plants adding a dose of greenery. A bar area has a few low chairs and tables next to a fireplace, providing a cozy atmosphere for an after dinner drink.

Location

Outside the city center, but right next to the metro station and bus stop

Campanile Amsterdam is in a lovely, quiet location outside of the city center and right next to Gaaserpark, which holds Amsterdam’s Planetarium. There’s not much in the way of attractions or restaurants within walking distance, but the metro station as well as a bus stop are right by the hotel, giving easy access to the city center in about 20 minutes (about the same time by car). Some tourist sites, like the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, are a bit farther to reach by public transit (about 35 to 45 minutes). The Amsterdam Arena and Heineken Music Hall can be reached in 10 minutes by car. Amsterdam's Schipol Airport is about a 20-minute drive, or around 35 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Basic rooms with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, though no air-conditioning or safes

The rooms at Campanile Amsterdam are small and simple, with basic amenities and enough space to make for a comfortable stay. Decor is straightforward, with white linens, plaid curtains, and a heavy focus on wooden elements -- wooden floors, blond-wood headboards, and desks. Overall it’s modern, but hardly fashion-forward or as up-to-date as Campanile properties in other cities. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, though there are no mini-fridges, air-conditioning, or safes. Bathrooms are decorated in white and blue tile, and are outfitted with shower/tub combos and toiletries in wall dispensers.

Features

Restaurant, terrace, small playground, meeting room, and a public computer

Campanile Amsterdam is a three-pearl hotel with basics features. There’s a restaurant that serves lunch and a dinner, as well as buffet breakfast for a fee (to-go breakfast is also available). Vending machines provide snacks throughout the day, while guests can make use of a microwave to heat items. Though the outside terrace (accessed from the restaurant) only has a few benches, it’s a good spot for parents to watch their children play on the hotel’s small playground. There’s a single meeting room for business travelers, as well as a public computer and free Wi-Fi. Parking is free.
