The 51-room Best Western Delphi is a mid-range chain hotel located in Old South Amsterdam. It's not in the heart of the city, but the Museum Quarter and Rai Convention Center are within walking distance. A nearby tram station takes passengers into Amsterdam's center in about 15 minutes. The hotel attracts tourists and business travelers looking for an affordable and comfortable hotel in a quieter part of Amsterdam. Expect extra charges for Wi-Fi and continental breakfast. Bike rentals are available, and free coffee and fruit are provided in the lobby throughout the day. It may be worth checking rates at the nearby Holiday Inn Express - Amsterdam South, which offers free Wi-Fi and kosher continental breakfast.
The four-story Best Western Delphi is intimately sized with a lounge that serves breakfast (for a fee) in the morning and cocktails (for purchase) in the evening, plus free fruit and coffee throughout the day. Hardwood floors and light wood paneling in the front desk area lead into the country-style lounge, furnished with a wicker sofa and matching chairs. Small dining tables are topped with green vases filled with fresh blooms for a natural touch. A buffet table holds stacks of magazines.
In a residential neighborhood with local restaurants and shops
The Best Western Delphi is located in a convenient and quiet location away from the hustle and party scene of Amsterdam's city center. The neighborhood is mostly residential (rooms in the back of the hotel face neighboring gardens) though there are shops and restaurants nearby. The Van Gogh Museum (along with the rest of Museum Quarter) is a 10-minute walk north of the hotel. From the tram station right in front, guests can get to the city center in about 15 minutes. Of course, this wouldn't be Amsterdam without bikes, and the hotel rents them to guests by the day for a fun way to tour the neighborhood and the city.
The Best Western Delphi began renovating rooms in 2014. Peeling wallpaper was updated with fresh white paint, and black wall-mounted headboards replaced the dated-looking wooden ones. However, some rooms are still cramped. For example, the armchairs in the Superior Twin rooms are comically close to the bed. Bathrooms are generic with single sinks and white tile. Hairdryers are mounted to the wall. Rooms in the back of the hotel have pretty balconies overlooking neighboring gardens. Flat-screen TVs are a nice touch and cleanliness isn't an issue.
Bike rentals and a small bar but extra charges for Wi-Fi and breakfast
While there are some free perks at The Best Western Delphi, such as free coffee and fruit throughout the day, expect charges for Wi-Fi and a continental breakfast. Cocktails and wine can be purchased in the small lounge. Bikes are available to rent and massage services can be arranged. Business travelers should note that while there is a computer for guest's use, the hotel doesn't have meeting rooms. It may be worth checking rates at the nearby Holiday Inn Express - Amsterdam South for meeting room access and free Wi-Fi.
