Bottom Line

The three-pearl 377 House - Amsterdam is a traditional canal house with fashionable, design-conscious decor and a romantic vibe that makes it a hit with visiting couples. It’s optimally located next to one of Amsterdam’s canals, which means there are great views from many of its 15 air-conditioned rooms. A dark and handsome design characterizes the rooms, though some can be cramped. And on-site features are fairly limited to free Wi-Fi, bike rentals, and breakfast (for a fee). The Hotel De Hallen is a nearby alternative with an equally trendy design plus an on-site dining option and a public computer.

Oyster Hotel Review

Traditional canal house with modern, sleek interiors drawing vacationing couples

377 House - Amsterdam is housed in a traditional canal house characterized by dark brown bricks and white trim. Despite being remodeled, the building maintains much of its original structural aspects, such as narrow steps to the front door and a small interior staircase to the main floor where the elevator is located. These stairs and narrow carpeted hallways might make it difficult for people with compromised mobility to navigate the hotel. The property lacks a traditional lobby, but rather has a small wooden desk at the end of the main hall. Modern photographs and classical art pieces hang on the walls, exemplifying the contrast of the hip modernism and historical style of the hotel. The small breakfast room has a dark and moody gray-and-blue color scheme, tables with a mix of chairs and couches for seating, tiled floors, and large blue built-in shelves displaying knick knacks. The hotel draws mostly vacationing couples.

Within walking distance of Leidseplein, Musemplein, and other areas of interest

The hotel is located in the Overtoombuurt neighborhood next to the outer ring of Amsterdam’s Canal Rings. It’s a busy area and easily within walking distance to popular destinations, public transportation, and nearby dining options. A five-minute walk takes travelers to the Leidseplein, a transport hub with many restaurants and bars. The natural beauty and outdoor events of Vondelpark is not far from the hotel -- just a six-minute walk.  Museumplein, a public square that’s home to three museums (including the Van Gogh Museum), takes 15 minutes to reach on foot. The Nine Streets shopping area is also a 15-minute walk. The world famous Red Light District, an area known for legal prostitution, marijuana, sex shops, and fetish bars, is an 18-minute tram ride away. Schiphol Amsterdam Airport is a 16-minute drive.

Design-conscious rooms with minibars and small bathrooms, some with canal views

Guest rooms at the 377 House have a design-conscious, handsome look. Cool tones of slate gray and black create a relaxing atmosphere, while plush and wood-framed headboards, tile or wooden floors, and filament lightbulbs add sophistication. Room sizes vary; some are spacious for a European property, while others are cramped and barely big enough to fit a bed. Some of the rooms have views of the canal, and all have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and kettles, but no phones. Units also have Nespresso machines, but the capsules cost extra (except for guests who book directly through the hotel website). Beige-tile bathrooms are also a tight fit, but they include walk-in shower stalls, hairdryers, heated towel racks, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries. Some past guests have complained of overheard street noise.

Breakfast for a fee, bike rental, and free Wi-Fi

Though this hotel lacks a restaurant, they do serve a combination of hot made-to-order dishes and a buffet breakfast every morning in a chic dining room. Breakfast isn’t included with room rates, though those who book through the hotel’s website get a discount. Other on-site features are limited, but there’s also an on-site bike rental for guests and free Wi-Fi throughout the property.
