Bottom Line

Located right on a quiet pebble beach a 15-minute walk away from the main town of Positano, the three-pearl Hotel Pupetto is a great choice for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Traditionally decorated -- think patterned tile and wrought-iron headboards in the 34 rooms -- the furnishings are growing dated in a less-picturesque way, but they're comfortable. The on-site restaurant offers up a great free breakfast as well as stunning views, while colorful sun loungers on the beach await visitors (for a fee). For those with children, the kid-friendly, three-pearl Hotel Poseidon is closer to the center of town and still carries a romantic-getaway vibe.

Oyster Hotel Review

Scene

Quiet and secluded, the Hotel Pupetto offers a relaxing beachfront getaway.

Like other properties in the area, the hotel is built into the hillside -- not as high as most, but still offering lovely views of the ocean. Hotel Pupetto's lobby, traditional to the point of being old-fashioned, encapsulates the airy, simple decor typical of the Amalfi area. Cheery blues and oranges predominate the beautifully tiled floors, set alongside high white ceilings and molded archways. Black-metal chandeliers and large pots of colorful hydrangeas fill the space, plus an out-of-place cluster of hyper-contemporary stools in the corner. This a good option for those seeking relaxed, quiet getaways, as the property's traditional style, private-feeling beach, and trellis-covered pathways all contribute to a feeling of being transported away and secluded from the bustle of everyday life.

Location

Situated on a private beach, just a 15-minute walk from the main village of Positano.

Situated directly on a small, relatively quiet beach, Hotel Pupetto's location couldn't be any better for visitors coming to take advantage of sun and sea. Colorful umbrellas and cabanas pattern the sand, while sailboats drift gently out at sea. The picturesque village of Positano itself is about a 15-minute walk away along a gorgeous path. Built into the hills in true Amalfi fashion, mobility-reduced travelers should note that streets are steep and narrow. Most dining options are found there, although there's a well-reviewed beach cafe called Da Ferdinando adjacent to the property. A few other businesses -- a sea kayak rental, another holiday residence, and a lido, for example -- are nearby, but other than those, the area is quite secluded.

It will take some time to get to the property: Most tourists will come in to Positano through Naples Airport (two and a half hours away by bus) or Rome (five hours by train). Tourists who don't fancy the walk to the property can then take a taxi journey from the town center to the property (about 15 to 20 minutes). It should be noted that the drop-off point is located at the top of around 300 stairs that take guests down to the hotel, which might be strenuous for some. However, porters are on hand to carry luggage up and down.

Rooms

Views from the property's lackluster rooms are lovely.

The hotel's 34 air-conditioned rooms all have balconies or huge terraces (Superior rooms) overlooking the sea, which adds to the feeling of real-world escape. Those staying in standard rooms can choose between full sea views or ones with a partial view of the lemon garden; the sea views is definitely the way to go.

The patterned Italian tile in each room is gorgeous and wrought-iron headboards are pleasant, but overall, the rooms are underwhelming and dated. Furnishings are limited to a floating desk and sitting area, plus a curtained-off closet space with a dresser. Bedding in shades of blue and tiny gold-framed artwork add additional color. The turquoise-tiled bathrooms are amply sized, though shower stalls in the Superior Rooms are tiny (other rooms offer shower/tub combos). All rooms have in-room safes, mini-fridges with water and soda, and small flat-screen TVs.

Features

Few amenities include pebble beach just out the door and an on-site restaurant.

Down on the pebble beach, there are colorful blue and orange loungers grouped in pairs, though use of these come with a nominal daily fee. The beach is secluded and relatively quiet compared to Positano's main beach near the village center. There are no other leisure facilities on-site, but free boat service to and from the main beach in Positano is available. Meanwhile, the hotel's bar and restaurant serve up amazing views, along with tasty food. Bar Bagni Pupetto is located right on the beach and has a thatched roof and cheerful patio lights, plus it offers light lunches.

The restaurant, with pleasantly old-fashioned white and wicker tables and chairs, is situated on a terrace that overlooks the harbor area, where guests can enjoy dinner with the background noise of crashing waves. It's well-known for its wood-fired pizzas and fish dishes typical of the Amalfi Coast. The free breakfast buffet is generous and includes great coffee. A second terrace, located below the restaurant, is a loosely paved stone patio with white wrought-iron furniture.

Free Wi-Fi is available in common areas, but it can be patchy.
