Bottom Line

The mid-range Hampton Inn Albuquerque-University/Midtown offers inexpensive rooms and a convenient location. This central Albuquerque hotel had a facelift in 2010, giving the big lobby and 131 rooms a modern feel. Convenient freebies include Wi-Fi, parking, and a hot breakfast. There are also some perks on offer such as 32-inch flat-screen TVs, an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, and a fitness center. While there is some space to lounge by the pool, the bland hotel grounds aren't the most pleasant backdrop for swimming and sunbathing.

Business-friendly with clean rooms and free breakfast

Hampton Inn has built a brand where travelers expect the basics at a low price. In addition, this Hampton Inn features a fresh look thanks to a renovation in 2010. All interior spaces were spruced up with new furniture and decor, giving the hotel a more modern look than the older Hampton Inn Albuquerque-North. The lobby is bright and colorful, and if there's any scene at this Hampton Inn, it is found in this space. The hotel offers a free hot daily breakfast in the adjacent cozy dining room as well.

There's also a relaxing atmosphere to be found at the outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, although the scenery is uninspiring.

In midtown Albuquerque close to I-40

Located just off I-40 in central Albuquerque, the Hampton Inn Albuquerque-University/Midtown is within an easy drive of attractions such as Old Town and the University of New Mexico. Parking at the hotel is free and there is no shuttle service offered.

Sitting along the Rio Grande at an elevation of 5,312-ft, Albuquerque occupies a high desert environment. The city was founded in 1706 by the Spanish as a colonial outpost in the New World. Today, Albuquerque is home to more than 530,000 people of over 70 different ethnicities -- including Native Americans, Latinos, and Anglos -- making it the largest city in New Mexico. Many travelers are drawn to the culture of Albuquerque that can be explored through its artwork, cuisine, and architecture.

Albuquerque is also known as a center of high-tech industry and research. The Sandia National Laboratory, General Electric, and Kirtland Air Force Base all call the city home. It’s also the ballooning capital of the world. Albuquerque hosts the International Balloon Fiesta each October, an event that might be the most photographed in the world. Local hot air balloon companies offer rides to visitors year-round.

As a four-season city with 300 sunny days a year, Albuquerque has an active community of golfers, hikers, skiers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and fishermen. The Sandia Mountains just to the east provide a high-altitude respite from the summer heat and many miles of forested trails, and a winter playground featuring Sandia Peak Ski Area. Any visit to Albuquerque is incomplete without a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, the longest tram in the world, ascending 2.7 miles from the outskirts of the city to the Sandia Mountains at 10,378 feet.
